Open Society Foundations is seeking applications for the South Asia Scholarship Program that is aimed at providing full fellowships to qualified eligible students from Afghanistan and Nepal to complete graduate degrees in sustainable development, counseling, and law in India, Hong Kong and the UK.
Courses Available
Master of Sustainable Development Practice; Master of Education Counseling; and a Masters of Law (LLM) in rights-based fields, such as human rights, disability rights, and minority rights.
Program Description
The Scholarship Program offers an opportunity to pursue post-graduate study in India, the UK, and Hong Kong for reform-minded individuals who demonstrate both academic and professional excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision-makers and agents of change. After the completion of fellowship, the participants are expected to return home and apply their new knowledge in practice. The program will also introduce students to colleagues from the region and encourage cross-national dialogues and networking among professional communities.
Institutions for Fellowship
Fellows seeking master’s degrees will be placed at universities in India for two-year programs at:
- The Energy Resources Institute in New Delhi for the MA in Sustainable Development Practice;
- Tata Institute for Social Sciences in Mumbai for the MA in Education Counseling.
Fellows seeking rights-based LLM degrees will be placed at either:
- The University of Essex in the UK
- The University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong, the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China
Eligibility Requirements
The program does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. The competition is merit-based and open to those meeting the following criteria:
- an undergraduate degree at the time of application deadline with an excellent academic record;
- a legal resident of and currently living in home country (Afghanistan or Nepal);
- experience working in at least one of the fields listed above in home country;
- proficiency in English;
- have a strong commitment to return to their home country after completion of the program to continue work in the supported field and to impart knowledge gained during studies.
Other Criteria
Grantees of the program are expected to:
- Uphold the academic standards of their host institution and undertake full-time study for the duration of the Program. Failure to do so will result in dismissal.
- Earn an MA within the standard 2-year program period.
- Comply with the visa regulations of the host country and may be subject by the terms of the visa to a home residency requirement upon completion of the Program.
- Will return to their home countries after completing the degree and take up meaningful posts in their field.
Fellows are also required to sign a grant agreement, which outlines the Program’s Terms and Conditions. These requirements will be reviewed in detail with all grantees prior to the beginning of the fellowship.
