UN Women, formerly known as UNIFEM, is the United Nations agency working for the cause of gender equality and women empowerment in the world. It was established in 2010 by the General Assembly to speed up the implementation of the programs designed for women and girls worldwide. This agency officially became operational on January 1, 2011.
As far as UN Women’s activities in Pakistan are concerned, it works for the betterment of the lives of women in Pakistan by supporting the Pakistani Government in implementing the programs for gender equality in the country.
UN Women Pakistan provides technical advisory and support to the delivery and implementation of gender equality and women empowerment agenda in Pakistan. UN Women is uniquely positioned to support initiatives of the government and non-governmental organizations leading towards a full realization of gender equality and women’s empowerment commitments in line with the national and international gender equality and human rights commitments such as, amongst others, the Constitution, National Action Plan for Women’s Empowerment as well as the Beijing Platform for Action, CEDAW, Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals.
Call for Proposals
UN Women Pakistan is currently seeking proposals from national NGOs and private companies, research institutions and organizations to carry out a baseline and research study on selected areas of the National Plan of Action for Women for Pakistan.
The areas of intervention will be selected through a process of specific and focused discussions between the selected organization, representatives from the Government and UN Women.
Proposed Key Activities
The proposed activities in conducting the baseline and research study on the status of women in Pakistan should include (and not be limited to):
– Desk reviews and analyses that adequately describe issues faced by women of Pakistan in all walks of life, and trends and gaps (must be of reliable and credible quality, and followed by a bibliography of useful and relevant research material)
– Interviews and consultations with relevant actors and organizations to identify patterns of women and girl’s exclusion and discrimination, and inequalities they face in comparison to men and boys
– Focused Group Discussions to review and analyze data and reports produced by relevant and reliable non-state actors
– Analyze studies, reports and analysis that use data sufficiently disaggregated (by sex, age, financial status, rural/urban, ethnicity, region, religion and language, as well as disability, HIV/AIDS and other status) to identify women issues over a time period, including issues of excluded women and emerging trends
– Research and interviews to assess capacity assets and gaps at different levels of the government and other key actors (national and provincial) to deliver the priorities as set out in the National Plan of Action for Women
– Provincial mappings and risk assessments on the status of women in conflict situations and natural disasters, and how these affect the women’s empowerment process
– Data collection and review of existing information/literature on people’s attitudes and behaviour towards ‘gender equality and women’s empowerment’, by rural/urban, male/female, employed/unemployed, etc
– Global and regional trends/changes affecting the status of women in Pakistan
Timeframe for these activities will be across a period of four to five months.
