Cancer Research Initiative of South Africa (CARISA) invites proposals for research in the fields of childhood cancer and prostate cancer screening. CARISA is a joint initiative between the South African Medical Research Council and the Cancer Association of South Africa.
The purpose is to improve the health and well-being of South Africans by promoting, coordinating and facilitating cancer, and cancer-related, research.
Childhood cancers differ in type, aetiology and outcome from adult cancers; however at least half of all South African children with cancer are never diagnosed, or present for treatment at too late a stage, presumably as a consequence of a combination of lack of knowledge on the part of parents and health care practitioners, and lack of access to medical care and appropriate treatment facilities, there fore this proposal will focus on biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, management, treatment, palliation and/or psycho-social aspects of childhood cancers with specific reference to the South African context – particularly the HIV epidemic.
Eligibility-
- The Principal Investigator/s must be South African with extensive experience in the field of childhood cancers
- The project must be multi-institutional, consortium-based and cross-disciplinary
- The proposed projects should facilitate the academic development of young South African researchers, ideally incorporating work towards an advanced higher degree for at least one member of the project team.
- Proposed project duration should not exceed three years.
