The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) is currently inviting applications from the academics in South African public universities in the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to submit research proposals for the Catalytic Research Programme. The aim of this programme is to promote, support and strengthen coherent research projects which aim to catalyse and open up new avenues of Humanities and Social Science (HSS) scholarship, while assisting in the establishment of a network of researchers across universities in South Africa and the Global South.
Priority Areas
The proposals are invited for the following broad research areas:
- Economic Development and Alternatives
- Pre and Post-Colonial Histories and Theories
- Histories of Labour Migration in Southern Africa
- Histories and Legacies of Liberation Struggles
- Political Economy
- Environment and Ecological Alternatives
- Art History
- Visual and Performing Arts
- African Music and Musicology
- Urban and Rural linkages, spaces, and experiences
- Digital Humanities and Social Sciences
- Higher Education, Teaching and Learning
- Comparative BRICS related research in the following areas:
- Sustainable Development and Quality of Life;
- Education; Health;
- Economic Growth and Development;
- Peace and Security;
- Social Justice;
- Political and Economic Governance; and
- Knowledge and Innovation.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be:
- Researchers and academics holding permanent positions in South African public universities in the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
- Principal applicants must hold a PhD, not less than three years.
- Principal applicants must demonstrate a sustained publication record.
- Research projects must meet the following:
- Collaboration with relevant institutions and universities.
- Interdisciplinarity of the research project.
- Coherent and feasible research project.
- Contribution of the research project to the body of knowledge in the field.
- Innovative use of thematic rubric and methodologies.
- Capacity building.
How to Apply
Applicants must provide the following documents as part of their applications:
- A summary of the proposal and motivation letter (not longer than 1000 words).
- Full resume of the applicant team members.
- Letter of endorsement of institution(s), where the research project will be based (relevant Dean/s).
- A full research proposal outlining the problem statement, methodology, feasibility of your study, detailed budget, timeframes, and the contribution it will make to the body of knowledge in the particular field of study.
