The NIHSS PhD/Doctoral Scholarships for South Africans

The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) invites qualified South African students who have successfully completed Master’s degree or are entering the first year of PhD/doctoral study to apply for scholarships. The PhD/Doctoral Scholarships of NIHSS aims to promote scholarship in the humanities and social sciences in South Africa, specifically among designated groups. The scholarship is a joint program of NIHSS and South African Humanities Deans’ Association (SAHUDA).
Selected scholarship recipients will be provided R120,000 in the first year. The award can be extended up to three years through annual renewal if the candidate meets satisfactory progress.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be South African citizens from designated groups.
- Applications from previously disadvantaged portions of the population is highly encouraged.
- Applicants must have successfully completed Master’s degree or be entering the first year of PhD/Doctoral study, or registered for PhD study in first year of enrollment.
Complete application documents include – a cover page, letter of confirmation by the prospective department or supervisor that the candidate will be admitted to the participating university for registration for PhD study, a motivation letter, a recent intellectual autobiography, a research proposal, two letters of recommendation, a certified copy of full academic transcript(s), a certified copy of ID, and sample copies of best writing.
