Erasmus Mundus Action 2 for South Africa (ema2sa) is the joint program of 7 European and 5 South African universities and is being run under the broader Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Program. The ema2sa program is being coordinated by the University of Leuven. Applications are currently being invited for Ema2sa grants with different scholarships available for Master’s students, doctoral students and staff members. The organizers plan to send at least 51 applicants from South African to Europe under this program.
Scholarship Provisions
Students and staff members will receive:
- a monthly subsistence allowance from €1,000 to € 2,500
- a tuition fee waiver
- a flight ticket covering one round trip South Africa – Europe
- full insurance coverage (travel, health, accident)

Target Beneficiaries
- South African nationals studying or working at one of the universities member of the ema2sa consortium at the moment of application.
- Nationals of South Africa, registered in a higher education institution not included in the ema2sa consortium or having obtained a university degree or equivalent at an institution in South Africa.
Eligibility Criteria
- You must have the South African nationality.
- If you are studying or working at one of the South African partner universities at the moment you apply for the ema2sa scholarship, you belong to Target Group 1. If you belong to Target Group 1, you can apply for a master’s, PhD or academic/administrative staff scholarship.
- If you are a South African national registered at a non-partner university or with a university (or equal) degree from a non-partner institution in South Africa, you belong to Target Group 2. In this case, you can apply for a master’s or PhD scholarship but cannot go on a staff exchange.

- Motivation for the mobility period
- Learning Agreement or Study Plan (for master’s students)
- Research/Teaching Plan (for PhD and academic staff)
