The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa’s oldest university, and is one of Africa’s leading teaching and research institutions.
UCT is currently seeking applications for A W Mellon Foundation Honors Scholarships in the Humanities – 2012.
Andrew A. Mellon Foundation’s higher education program in South Africa is aimed at developing capacity in higher education by providing opportunities for individuals who were previously disadvantaged and individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the previously disadvantaged. The Foundation has supported fellowships for honors, Masters and PhD students.
Selection Criteria
– Merit and/or Financial Need
– Full-time registration at UCT for Honors study
– Successful students will qualify for a needs-based subvention if gross family income and/or income from all sources is less than R200,000 per annum. Family income and support must be declared and supported by documentary evidence.
– Students who declare that they are independent from their families do not qualify for needs based support but may qualify for a merit award
– Students whose financial need is caused through life-style choices (dependents, choice of housing, etc), do not qualify for needs-based support but may be eligible for a merit award.
Candidates requiring financial assistance must make every effort to complete their studies within the specified time frames. Funding will not be available beyond the above-mentioned tenures.
Value of the scholarship is R15,000 – R45,000 with a tenure of 1 year.
