The Embassy of the United States in Colombo, Sri Lanka has issued a call for proposals for the 2012 Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) program.
Since its creation by the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation has provided financial support to more than 640 cultural preservation projects in more than 100 countries. The Fund supports a wide range of projects to preserve cultural heritage, such as the restoration of historic buildings, assessment and conservation of museum collections, archaeological site preservation, documentation of vanishing traditional craft techniques, improved storage conditions for archives and manuscripts, and documentation of indigenous languages.
AFCP will be giving top priority to project activities that meet international standards for the preservation of cultural heritage. Funding levels range from $10,000 to $100,000.
Applicants may propose performance periods of up to 60 months (five years) with five budget periods of one year each. The projects must begin before September 30, 2012 and conclude not later than September 30, 2016.
What Can be Funded
1) Cultural Sites – includes (but is not limited to) historic buildings and sites and archaeological sites. Proposals in this category may involve:
- Restoration of a historic building
- Preservation of an archaeological site
- Documentation of cultural sites in a region for preservation purpose.
2) Cultural Objects and Collections – includes from a museum, site, or similar institution and includes archaeological and ethnographic objects, paintings, sculpture, manuscripts, and general museum conservation needs. Proposals in this category may involve:
- Conservation treatment for an object or collection of objects;
- Needs assessment of a collection with respect to its condition and strategies for improving its state of conservation;
- Inventory of a collection for conservation and protection purposes;
- The creation of safe environments for storage or display of collections; or specialized training in the care and preservation of collections.
3) Forms of Traditional Cultural Expression – includes traditional music, ceremony, knowledge, languages, dance, drama, and craft. Proposals in this category may involve:
- Documentation and audiovisual recording of traditional music and dance forms for preservation and eventual dissemination
- Support for training in the preservation of traditional arts or crafts in danger of extinction.
