Founded in 1993 by French Government, the Social Fund for Development (SFD) is aimed towards providing financial support to local communities in all the countries that come under Priority Solidarity Zone. SFD’s mission is to fight against poverty and support communities for their own development. When SFD was first launched in Tanzania, it had a budget of 600,000 Euros. At that time, about 18 projects were funded related to agricultural infrastructures, human rights, and cultural tourism in Kilwa. SFD currently supports a large number of projects in Tanzania for betterment of the lives of people and all-round development of communities.
In this context, SFD has issued a call for proposals aimed at supporting local development initiatives, strengthening civil society, fighting against poverty and reducing inequalities in Tanzania.
What type of activities are supported?
To be supported, the project must:
– Respond to an identified need of the community, directly benefit to it, and involve it in all project stages
– Achieve tangible realisations or improvements that are sustainable when funding stops
– Anticipate the necessary running and maintenance costs
Amount of the grants
Min 10 000 Euros (+/- 22 Millions Tsh)
Max 100 000 Euros (+/- 220 Millions Tsh)
Priorities for the 2011 call for proposals
– Marginalized areas (Mwanza, Kigoma, Zanzibar, border areas)
– Promotion and protection of Human Rights, access to Justice, Governance
– Poverty reduction through innovative initiatives (rural development, income-generating activities, adding value to local productions)
– Vocational training, education for adults, disabled, and vulnerable groups
– Health (prevention of harmful habits, access to clean water)
– Heritage conservation
Eligibility Requirements
Associations, NGOs and Tanzanian groups are eligible for funding, provided they can prove that they have been active for at least two years prior to the application. Priority will be given to Tanzanian organisations, but local branches of international NGOs can also apply.
