The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), together with the Uganda Science Journalists Association (USJA), invites submissions for 2012 UNCST – USJA Science Communicators’ Awards. Areas in research and creativity among journalists and science communicators while covering science and technology issues. The awards will be given in two phases as followed-
1. Media houses awards–
These awards are given to the best media houses, including print and electronic, in the coverage of science and technology in Uganda. The award ceremony will be held on September 21, 2012, at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, during the closing ceremony the National Science Week.
2. Individual journalists’ awards
These awards are given to the best journalists in the coverage of science and technology in Print media, Television, Radio and Online categories. Winners will be announced and awarded in November during the 2nd USJA annual Science Journalism Forum. This year’s forum will be held in commemoration of the World Science Day for Peace and Development, on the theme: “Creating public understanding of Uganda’s energy needs and cleaner energy options.”
3. Science communicators’ award
This is awarded to a person who is not a journalist but has demonstrated high ability and skills in using the mass media to communicate science and technology. It will be given during the 2nd USJA annual Science Journalism Forum.
Media houses are hereby requested to submit the following–
- Programme line up in the case of radios and televisions, and weekly proof of science and technology coverage in the case of print media.
- Evidence of institutional capacity building programmes for example short term training and staff placement or deployment on science and technology related assignments.
- Three copies of the best works published/broadcast by the media house between October 2011 and July 2012.
Eligibility–
The awards target Ugandan science journalists and science communicators living in Uganda, or in the Diaspora but having their works published in Uganda. The entries should demonstrate exceptional skills in communicating science and technology in Uganda. A submission in languages other than English should be accompanied with a translation.
