The Makerere University Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) was launched in 2010 with the objective to offer financial support to bright but disadvantaged girls. The foundation was launched as a continuation of the Makerere University Female Scholarship Initiative (FSI), with financial support coming from Carnegie Corporation of New York.
In November 2010, Makerere University made an appeal to the Government of Uganda to avail Shs 1.5 billion from the Peace, Recovery and Development Plan (PRDP) for 150 scholarships for girls from Greater Northern Uganda to access higher education at the University. Letters were written to 38 districts requesting them to make contributions to FSF. In response to this appeal, the districts of Maracha, Nebbi, Nakapiripirit, Zombo and Napak offered many scholarships for the disadvantaged girls.
The goal of FSF is to increase the enrolment, retention and improve the academic performance of female under graduate students at Makerere University with specific emphasis on sciences and giving priority to applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented geographical areas in Uganda.
