UK Aid Match initiated on 30 June, 2011. It is a demand-led fund which match public donations to appeal for development activities focused on poverty reduction in developing countries. UK Aid Match is a mechanism which allows the UK public to have a direct say in how an element of the aid budget is spent.
This is called UK Aid Match because DFID will match, pound for pound, public donations to appeals made by not-for-profit organizations for work that is carried out in developing countries to reduce poverty.
Organizations applying to have their appeals match funded will be selected on the basis of:
- The public reach of their appeal and commitment and capacity to communicate the results of the funding to the public;
- Capacity and track record in managing development activities
- Commitment to and capacity to account transparently on the use of the funding
- Clarity of the expected results of the proposed activities
- Whether the activities are consistent with DFID’s priorities and values
- Whether the activities represent value for money
Significant features of UK Aid Match are:
- Value of scheme £30m for new commitments up to June 2012
- Definition of an ‘appeal’ A call to the public over a maximum period of three months to donate funds to a specific organization or project
- Duration of scheme Pilot scheme to run for one year from June 2011
- Eligibility to apply for UK Aid Match Open to any UK organization running an appeal in the UK for public donations from the UK public for poverty reduction projects in developing countries
- Organizations that receive funds from DFID via other funding streams are eligible to apply
- However, total annual DFID support (including funds from this scheme) must not exceed 40% of the organization’s total annual income.
- The appeal must expect to achieve a minimum of 400,000 opportunities for the public to view information about the appeal.
