The Christoffel-Blindenmission (CBM) founded in 1908 with the mission to support people without sight, regardless of nationality, gender or religion now supports organizations and projects on different disability intervention sectors including hearing, orthopedic work, Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR), Community Mental Health and low vision, amongst other areas. The support includes health, rehabilitation, advocacy and empowerment, education and livelihood opportunities.
The CBM aims to mainstream disability into all aspects of development and empower persons with disabilities to take an active role in their communities through inclusion in development projects and involvement in community initiatives. It is committed to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities in the poorest communities of the world. In lower-income regions of the world, CBM strives to build the capacity of partner organizations. The foundation works proactively with its Partners to break down barriers which prevent people accessing services. CBM prioritizes services that improve the lives of children and women and take environmental issues into account.
CBM supports health care for existing disabilities and prevention of conditions which can lead to disability. It seeks to improve access to health care, education and rehabilitation services for persons with visual, hearing, physical or psychosocial impairments. It also works with local partners to ensure that people with disabilities are included at all levels of disaster preparedness and response.
In 2013 alone, the CBM supported 672 projects in 68 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, with a program expenditure of EUR 60.5 million, reaching more than 10.5 million people
