The World Land Trust’s (WLT) ‘Books for Conservation’ Programme seeks to provide important reference material to NGOs in places where it is difficult to obtain it. From its wide stock of used and slightly damaged books related to natural history and the environment, it offers material to needy NGOs free of charge.
The Books for Conservation programme is an exciting partnership between the World Land Trust and the Natural History Book Service (NHBS). From simple beginnings in 2002 when the NHBS donated books surplus to their requirements to the WLT this programme has developed into an important resource for struggling NGOs throughout the world.
How the Programme works
- The WLT regularly receives donations of used and slightly damaged books from the NHBS;
- These books are added to the Books for Conservation catalogue;
- When the WLT receives an application the NGO is evaluated to check their eligibility to receive books;
- The organisation must also have a means of personally couriering the books to their intended destination which will be evaluated by WLT;
- The NGO will then be sent the current book catalogue;
- Once the organisation has selected their books, their collection will be organised.
To qualify for a donation of books from the WLT ‘Books for Conservation’ Programme, your organisation must be:
- A non-governmental organisation;
- Located within a country where it is difficult to obtain natural history reference material;
- Connected with the preservation of the environment, natural habitats and/or wildlife.
In order to take advantage of this programme, NGOs need to arrange collection of donated books from its office in the UK as WLT does not ship them overseas.
