Entertainer Monique Coleman was appointed by Secretary General Ban Ki Moon last November as the first ever UN Youth Champion for the International Year of Youth and is currently on a world tour to raise awareness of challenges facing youth with a message of hope, resilience and promise for the world’s youth.
Coleman is an American actress, singer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist and is known for her co-starring role in Disney’s High School Musical movies, a hugely popular global sensation. She competed in the third edition of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, finishing in fourth place. Coleman also launched her online talk show Gimme Mo’, a show dedicated to empowering today’s youth on September 8, 2010.
She has so far visited more than 20 countries in five continents as part of her world tour.
Coleman’s latest stop was Washington DC where she participated in a panel discussion at the United Nations Foundation with Nicole Goldin Senior Advisor, Policy, Planning and Learning Bureau, USAID; Ashok Regmi Director of Youth Action Net, an initiative of the International Youth Foundation; Aaron Sherinian Vice President, Communications and Public Relations, United Nations Foundation. The panel engaged in highlighting the issues concerning the challenges faced by young people around the world – and the actions taken by them to empower themselves to overcome these challenges.
Coleman has risen to the occasion and seemed to be fulfilling her role as UN Youth Champion quite successfully.
