The Resource Alliance and the Rockefeller Foundation recently honoured the Indian philanthropic organizations that were adjudged the winners of India NGO Awards 2010 during an event held in New Delhi. India NGO Awards are considered to be the most popular awards in the social sector for the NGOs ensuring accountability, transparency, and good practices while implementing their programs.
Winners of the India NGO Awards 2010:
Small Category – NGOs with budgets below Rs 50 lakhs
Joint Awardees: Development Association for Human Action (DEHAT) and Madhuram Narayanan Center for Exceptional Children.
Medium category- NGOs with budgets between Rs 50 lakhs and Rs 5 crores
Awardee: The Pardada Pardadi Educational Society
Large category – NGOs with annual budgets of over Rs 5 crore
Awardee: The Akanksha Foundation
Special Mention
Durbar Mahila Samanvaya Committee

The jury for this year’s India NGO Awards included: Mr. Nick Langton, Country Representative, The Asia Foundation; Mr. Subodh Bhargava, Chairman, Tata Communications Ltd; Mr. Venkat N. Krishnan, Founder Director, GiveIndia; Ms. Elizabeth Kurian, Regional Director – India Region of Sightsavers and Ms. Maneesha Dube, Editor-in-Chief, Media Transasia India Ltd.
Different parameters used for judging the winners included effective and sustainable mobilisation of resources from the local community; demonstration of efficient management of resources, good governance practices, transparency and accountability and effective communication and impact of services provided to the community. Applicants meeting the criteria were shortlisted for a site visit by a team of assessors in each region.
In recent years, the India NGO Awards have become quite credible in the non profit sector and have encouraged more and more people & organisations to work in the field of promoting transparency and accountability in this sector.
