The Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University recently announced 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, a list of top 500 Universities in the world that included eight of the UNAOC Research Network Partners.
The UNAOC partners that have been included in the top 500 universities are the elite world institutions like Columbia University, Florida State University (USA), University of Birmingham (UK), KU-Leuven (Belgium), Monash University (Australia), Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand), University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona(Spain).
The parameters that have been used by the ARWU include six objective indicators to rank world universities, using quantitative measures on alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific, articles published in journals of Nature and Science, articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution. More than 1000 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 are published on the web.
“We are glad to see the quality of members in the Research Network affirmed by the AWRU,” said Thomas Uthup, UNAOC Research and Education Manager while responding to the ranking.
