Community radios in Africa are quite popular and one of them the Bush Radio (South Africa), Africa’s oldest community radio station project in partnership with UNESCO is going to host a two-week training course for twelve women in community radio to produce radio documentaries on women in the fields of science and engineering. The project will invite at least one woman radio producer from each province of South Africa for the training with four women coming from Western Cape stations. “The stations included in this training is a mixture of urban, peri-urban and rural stations” said Brenda Leonard, the Managing Director of Bush Radio.
The training program is taking place from 29 August to 10 September 2011 and will form part of a broader project called “Upgrading the technical and Radio production skills of Women in Community Radio to produce features and documentaries on Women in Science and Engineering” that is funded by the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). This activity comes under the framework of UNESCO’s contribution towards strengthening free, independent and pluralistic media and within the efforts to develop human capacities.
The project that will last for six month includes the partial upgrade of the Bush Radio studios, a two-week training course and the production and broadcasting of programmes. The first programmes are scheduled to be ready for broadcast during Women’s Month in August, and continue airing over a period of 3 months.
The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2011, and is aimed at benefiting not only the women, but also the radio stations they represent and the broader community they broadcast too, as the skills obtained during the training will improve the overall quality and content of each station.
