The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) has made an agreement with the Government of Afghanistan, according to which approximately $268 million will be funded for joint programs promoting rule of law, corrections, fight narcotics, and law enforcement. The announcement regarding the same was made this week by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL). The agreement underlines the United States’ commitment to help the representatives in Afghanistan to improve the lives of millions of people living in Afghanistan.
The funds will be used to fulfill two main purposes. The first purpose is to ensure better governance by improving administration of justice and by increasing and promoting rule of law. The second purpose is to counter narcotics trade and the revenues generated by it that are used to finance fund terrorist and criminal activities, thereby ensuring peace and security in the region. U.S. funds will add on to the funds available with the Afghan Government, and will be utilized to support and expand current joint programs.
The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is already working in collaboration with the Government of Afghanistan and the international community, to bring positive changes in the criminal justice system in Afghanistan, strengthen law enforcement capabilities, reduce narcotics production and trafficking, and address the major issues of gender affairs, drug demand reduction, and co-operation on various levels. INL helps the Afghan Government’s formal justice sector to create and manage strong, capable, and independent legal institutions, to increase the ability of Afghan ministries to enforce the rule of law, and to establish peace in the region.
