In recent developments, an independent selection panel under the second round of the Government’s Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) has recommended about $25 million in funding to New Zealand non-government organisations (NGOs) working in developing countries.
The New Zealand Government in partnership with NGOs is committed to working towards delivering New Zealand’s overseas aid and development programme and make a tangible difference to the lives of those living in poverty.
Since its establishment a year ago, SDF has committed more than $56 million to New Zealand NGOs working offshore. Most of the funding made available for initiatives through the SDF has gone towards the Pacific with 53 percent of the activities in the region, 20 percent in South East Asia, and 27 percent in the rest of the world, including central Asia and Africa.
Most of the latest applications for this round of the SDF are focussed on the Pacific and on activities that promote economic growth and employment. This demonstrates that NGOs are responding well to the Government’s policy priorities for the New Zealand Aid Programme. Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji and Solomon Islands are the four leading Pacific country recipients of initiatives committed to under the SDF.
The SDF is a contestable fund for New Zealand based NGOs carrying out international development work overseas.
