The Government of Malawi, represented by the National Authorising Officer (NAO) of the European Development Fund, has issued a restricted call seeking concept notes at first stage for projects that would help in reducing the poverty in Malawi and improve livelihood conditions of rural households. This call for proposals also aims to encourage improvement of post-harvest storage and processing as well as promotion of agribusiness in the region.
Global Objective of This Call for Proposals
To contribute to the reduction of poverty in Malawi by improving the livelihood of rural households through the enhancement of post-harvest storage and agroprocessing, diversification of agricultural production and increased agribusiness.
Specific Objective of this Call for Proposals
- Improvement of post-harvest storage and processing;
- Increasing and diversification of smallholder agriculture productivity;
- Promotion of agribusiness;
Priority Issues
- Post harvest storage and processing is improved:
- Measures to increase agro-processing.
- Measures to improve post harvest storage capacity (building improved granaries, storage warehouses).
- Measures to reduce post harvest losses (drying and storage of foods).
- Measures to increase packaging facilities.
- Smallholder agriculture productivity is increased and diversified:
- Measures to increase productivity.
- Assist in the dissemination of marketing information between potential supply / production and demand / market.
- Agri-business is promoted:
- Measures to support farmers through training and learning by doing exercises in agriculture business management.
- Measures to promote agribusiness in various commodities (piggery, dairy, feed, horticultural, meat and abattoirs, aquaculture and other business).
Types of Activities
- Post harvest storage and processing is improved:
- Construction of modern granaries.
- Small scale agro processing of farm produce; like fruits drying and juice extraction, oil extraction, cassava drying etc.
- Construction or rehabilitation of market structures.
- Smallholder agriculture productivity is increased and diversified:
- Training of small scale and medium groups.
- Dissemination of marketing information between potential supply / production and demand/market.
- Promotion of contract farming, farmer associations and cooperatives by commodity
- Agri-business is promoted:
- Training as well as learning by doing exercises in agriculture business management.
- Establishment of organized markets.
