The European Commission’s international aid agency EuropeAid has announced a series of changes following the launch of a new strategy that will govern the organization up to 2020.
At a time when the world order is changing rapidly and emerging economies like China, India and Brazil are asserting their influence, the strategy demands that Europe must stand together and be an active partner in shaping global change. EuropeAid believes that the revised financial instruments will also enable the EU to further reinforce its role on the global stage and promote its interests and values.
The overall objective for the organization will be to ensure that the EU is also able to live up to its ambitions in promoting democracy, peace, solidarity, stability and poverty reduction and to help safeguard global public goods.
What does this mean for NGOs?
The EU will focus its work with its external partners on four policy priorities: enlargement, neighbourhood, cooperation with strategic partners and development cooperation.
The amount reserved for overseas aid in the EDF (European Development Fund) amounts to €26.986 billion”. The EDF covers: African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries (ACPs) and Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs).
Another funding source known as the Development Cooperation Instrument will provide opportunities for NGOs in Asia, Central Asia, Middle East, Latin America, and South Africa. The instrument will provide €19,662 million in development funding in the coming six years.
The revised strategy for EuropeAid is divided into six categories of expense corresponding to different areas of EU activities. Namely, Smart and Inclusive Growth, Sustainable Growth and Natural Resources, Security and Citizenship, Global Europe, Administration, and Compensation.
