The European Commission is inviting call for applications from European Cities to compete in two award categories:
Award 1: 2018 European Green Capital Award.
Award 2: European Green Leaf 2016.
Award 1: 2018 European Green Capital Award.
The European Green Capital Award is given each year to a European city, which has demonstrated a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards and is committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for future sustainable development.
Award 2: The European Green Leaf 2016
The European Green Leaf 2016 recognizes towns and cities that demonstrate a strong environmental record, with a particular emphasis on efforts that engage citizens’ in environmental awareness, generate green growth and new jobs.

- Local transport
- Green urban areas incorporating sustainable land use
- Nature and biodiversity

Eligibility Criteria
For Award 1: 2018 European Green Capital Award
- EU Member States, EU Candidate Countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants are eligible to apply for the award.
- In countries where there is no city with more than 100,000 inhabitants, the largest city is eligible to apply for the award.
For Award 2: The European Green Leaf 2016
- EU Member States, EU Candidate Countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland cities with a population of between 20,000 and 100,000 inhabitants are eligible to apply for the award.
