A statement in the Indian Parliament on Tuesday confirmed that foreign contributions to NGOs in the country were dominated by organizations in the United States. Donors from the US provided Rs. 3,772 crore in 2012 – 13, nearly four times as much as the next two countries on the list.
Organizations in Germany and Italy each contributed a little over Rs.1,000 crore to Indian NGOs under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. In the first six months of 2014 NGOs in India have reported income of Rs.476 crore.
Contributions to the Indian development sector by foreign donors have fluctuated in recent years with Rs.10,355 crore committed in 2010-11, a rise to Rs.11,554 in 2011-12, before a dip in 2012-13 back down to Rs.10,963 crore.
The past six months have also indicated a change in priorities for foreign donors as contributions have been redirected from traditional aid hotspots in Delhi to West Bengal. NGOs in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have maintained their position as the second and third biggest recipients of foreign contributions in 2014.
