The American Psychological Association (APN) together with IUPsyS is currently accepting applications for its Global Mental Health fellowships. The Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for a psychologist to spend one year in Geneva, Switzerland, at the World Health Organization (WHO), in the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. The fellow will focus on one or more issues related to the WHO Mental Health Action Plan.
The fellow will receive modest support for additional living costs in Geneva and related travel. This support is intended to supplement the fellow’s regular source of income.
The program is designed to:
- Provide psychologists with exposure to and involvement with international global mental health policy and implementation.
- Contribute to the more effective use of psychological knowledge and research in global mental health policy and implementation.
- Broaden awareness about the value of socio-behavioral approaches to health and mental health in a global context
Programme Objectives
- Strengthen effective leadership and governance for mental health.
- Provide comprehensive, integrated and responsive mental health and related services in community-based settings.
- Implement strategies for promotion and prevention in mental health.
- Strengthen information systems, evidence and research for mental health.
Eligibility criteria
- Psychologists from any country at all career levels with research experience and leadership in at least one of the areas related to the Mental Health Action Plan’s objectives are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants:
- Must be APA members or have applied for APA membership at the time of application, and hold a doctoral degree in psychology.
- Must have demonstrated research expertise relevant to the WHO Mental Health Action Plan.
- May be based in any country and must demonstrate resources for core funding during the fellowship year.
- Visa approval for work in Switzerland requires that the applicant demonstrate planned employment upon their anticipated return to their home country at the end of the fellowship year.

- Documentation that the applicant will be able to commit time to a fellowship year
