The Royal Geographical Society offers an annual Fellowship worth up to £8,000, for geographical research in the physical geography or the human dimension in the arid regions of the Middle East as a memorial to Sir Wilfred Thesiger.
The Fellowships fund researchers with an outstanding research proposal that involves fieldwork in an arid environment. Research within the Middle East will be given priority. The fellowship is supported with the kind generosity of His Majesty Qaboos bin Said al Said, Sultan of Oman.
Eligibility
- Applicants must have held a doctorate for at least 3 years and have a proven research record beyond their PhD.
- Applicants must be affiliated to a higher education institution.
- The project should include fieldwork.
- Individuals or groups can apply – but the Principal Investigator (PI) of any project must make the application.
Applications Format
The application should contain the following documents-
- Introduction of the candidate and contact details
- Title and short abstract.
- Aim of the project and objectives.
- Fellowship being applied for.
- Location of research area including the latitude and longitude.
- A full description of the proposed research.
- Duration of fieldwork.
- A risk assessment and safety management plan.
- An itemized budget.
- One-page CV of the project Principal Investigator.
- Two referee statements are required. Both referees should be independent of the research activities and institution.
