The PhD Fellowship Scheme was established in the year 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The scheme is basically aimed at bringing the best and brightest students from around the world to pursue doctoral studies in Hong Kong.
RGC is currently seeking applications from eligible candidates around the world to pursue research postgraduate programs in Government-funded institutions for the academic year 2012-2013.
Eligibility Criteria
– Eligible applicants are those seeking admission as new full-time PhD research candidates in Government-funded institutions in Hong Kong irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background.
– Applicants should have outstanding academic performance, and good research ability and potential.
About PhD Programs
HKUST offers research postgraduate programs in five Schools and an Interdisciplinary Programs Office: Science, Engineering, Business and Management, Humanities and Social Science. These programs require a combination of coursework and independent research, with major emphasis placed on research. The duration of study of full-time PhD programs will be three years if a relevant research master’s degree is earned prior to entering the PhD program, or four years with a first degree.
Selection Criteria
While academic excellence is a prime requirement, the Review Panels will take into account, but not limited to, the four areas below in the selection of candidates:
-Academic excellence.
-Research ability and potential.
-Communication and interpersonal skills.
–Leadership abilities and societal responsibility.
Monetary Provisions
The Fellowship provides the awardees:
– Monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (~USD2,500)
-Conference travel allowance of HK$10,000 (~USD1,300) per year for a maximum period of three years.
