The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany has announced the International Climate Protection Fellowships 2016 for leaders who are engaged in the field of climate protection and climate-related resource conservation in NGOs (other agencies) in developing countries.
Up to 20 young climate experts from non-European transition or developing countries who already have initial professional and leadership experience in this field will be funded in the next round. They are involved with issues relating to the scientific, engineering, legal, economic, health-related or social aspects of climate change.
Together with a host, they will work in Germany for a year on a research-based project of their own choice in the field of climate protection. The fellowships, which are funded under the International Climate Protection Initiative by the Federal Environment Ministry, will begin on 1 March 2017.
The current round of fellowships will bring together experts from a wide range of fields including business administration, geography, ecology, legal theory, climatology, agricultural economics and urban development. This year, eight fellowships were awarded to young researchers from Africa. Six fellows come from Asia and six from Latin America.
Benefits
- Fellowship amount according to qualifications between €2,150 and €2,650 per month
- Two-month intensive language course in Germany
- Lump sum for travel expenses
- Allowances for visits by family members lasting at least three months
- Allowance of €800 per month for the host in Germany for projects in the natural and engineering sciences, and €500 per month for projects in the humanities and social sciences
Eligibility Criteria
- First university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent), completed less than 12 years ago, counting from the end of the application period (1 March 2016)
- Leadership skills demonstrated by initial experience in leadership positions and/or appropriate references
- Extensive work experience (at least 48 months at the time of application) or a successfully completed doctorate in the field of climate protection or climate-related as of: 10/2015 resource conservation;
- Scientific publications (for applicants with a doctorate) in peer-reviewed journals according to international standards
- A detailed statement by a host in Germany, including a mentoring agreement; details of the proposal must be discussed with the prospective host prior to application
- Citizenship of a non-European transition or developing country (see list of countries) which is also the fellow’s habitual abode and place of work
- Very good knowledge of English and/or German, documented by appropriate language certificates
- Two expert references by individuals qualified to comment on the candidate’s professional, personal and, if applicable, academic eligibility and his / her leadership potential.
