The Institute of International Education Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) accepts direct application and/or third-party nomination of threatened scholars for the fellowship. The application or nomination should be made mentioning the situation of threat/risk. The SRF provides the grant awards to the host institution where the scholar will be supported with the fellowship.
The SRF Selection Committee considers applications at least 3 times a year. Emergency applications can be considered out of cycle if a candidate’s circumstances do not permit waiting for the next Selection Committee meeting. The scholar are encouraged to submit joint application cooperating with the host institution (it is not compulsory). Scholars who apply without pre-arranged host institution are supported to identify the host institution.
Selection Process
- The SRF contacts references and other sources, which may include independent experts on the country of origin or the particulars of the reported situation of threat/risk.
- In the cases of publicly known candidates or crises, verification is relatively straightforward.
- For particular types of reported threat, including anonymous intimidation or situations involving detainment, imprisonment, and/or physical violence, verification is undertaken with particular sensitivity to the security concerns of the candidate.
- All candidates considered for fellowship support are screened against a database of names comprised of over 25 major international watch lists.
Eligibility Criteria
- Application materials must be in English language or the language of the proposed host institution/country.
The application can be submitted via email, regular mail or fax. Complete application materials include- application cover-sheet, current curriculum vitae or resume, a letter or personal statement explaining the application, two academic/professional letters of reference, two personal letters of reference. In addition, detailed list of publications and/or research, samples of most current writing or research publications, letter from a university or college (host institution) with proposed budget.
Note: Eligibility, criteria, and award levels for Iraqi applicants differ slightly. Also, the applications/nominations must be submitted 4 weeks prior to SRF Committee meeting to be considered for the particular round.
