Young & talented researchers currently in South Africa have an opportunity to work with scientists from South Africa and IIASA. The advisors from South Africa will stay with the participants for 3-4 weeks and the IIASA advisers will be there for 1-2 weeks. Rest of the time, the students will experience distance learning via videoconferencing.
The South African Young Scientists Summer Program is the joint program of South African National Research Foundation, the South African Department of Science and Technology (DS-YSSP), the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and IIASA.
Participants will be residing at the University of the Free State for the SA-YSSP’s entire 3-month period beginning 2 November 2014 to 31 January 2015. They will be provided accommodation and meals along with a honorarium to cover other living expenses. Travel expenses are limited to participants from South Africa and from countries of the Southern African Development Community. They will also collaborate IIASA and South African scientists on a project relevant to their research broadening their research into interdisciplinary and trans-boundary research relevant to national, regional, and global needs.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be either an individual registered at a public South African Institution; or registered at an institution in a SADC country other than South Africa; or registered at an institution in an IIASA member country other than South Africa, irrespective of the country of their registration.
- Applicants can be the national of any country (except South Africa in some cases as mentioned above).
- Applicants must have current registration for a doctoral program with ability to work independently and to interact with other scientists.
- Applicants must be proficient in English and be able to communicate in a scientific environment.
- Applicants must be willing to participate in a range of interdisciplinary scientific activities.
- Applicant must be committed to complete the SA-YSSP research by submitting a resultant manuscript to an international scientific journal.
