The East-West Center is accepting applications for the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP). All the APLP participants are provided around $13,000 fellowship grants by the East-West Center to cover the majority of program fees. To be funded for accommodation, living expenses and more, request should be made for scholarships.
The program will be total nine months with first five months in Hawai’i Honolulu and second four months in fellows’ choice. The May graduation re-union will held in Honolulu.
Program structure
- Fall-Session (August-December 2015): Five-month residential program in Hawai’i.

- Spring Session (January – May 2016): Participants engage in a range of flexible, customized activities. There is continuation of the program through online and/or face-to-face meetings.
Activities
- Working in internship in Hawai’i, continental USA or Asia Pacific
- Coursework at the University of Hawai’i
- Developing applied leadership projects
- Carrying out extended field studies
- Returning to employment
Make note of the Supplementary Scholarships and Fellowships: Since the program fees paid by EWC is towards the five-months residential program in Hawai’i, scholarship applications should be made for further support to cover the living costs and/or spring semester costs –
- Up to $420 per month housing, up to $600 per month living expenses, and up to $7000 program fees
- Jhamandas WAtumull Fellowships for the citizens of India.
- Nainoa Thompson Fellowships for applicants who have demonstrated outstanding community leadership.
- Pacific Island Fellowships for citizens of Pacific Island nations
- Up to $420 per month housing, up to $600 per month living expenses, up to $750 field experience and up to $7000 program fees
- Hawaii Pacific Rim Society Fellowships for all.
- Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute Fellowship for applicants who have demonstrated academic focus and interest in Persian culture
- Obuchi Fellowships for applicants of Okinawan heritage or recent residence
- French Pacific Fellowships for citizens of French Pacific territories and France
- Up to $420 per month housing, and up to $7000 program fees
- Worldwide Uchinanchu Business Scholarship Endowment Fund for applciants of Okinawan heritage who reside outside Okinawa
- Amanda and Natalie Ellis Women Leaders Scholarship Awards for female citizens of Australia and New Zealand
- Up to $600 per month living expenses; and airfare to/from Hawai’i
- Bhutan Fellowships for applicants who are the citizen of the Kingdom of Bhutan
- Up to 420 per month towards housing
- Eleanor and Hermann Haus Fellowships for applicants who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in developing a better environment, including design, engineering or management
- Jean E. Rolles Fellowships for applicants who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in either the environment, economics, or the travel and hospitality industry.
- OmniTrak Loui Schmicker Scholar Awards for citizens of Thailand, China, Japan and applicants from Hawai’i who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in the private sector
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant can be any individual with a deep interest in leadership training and promoting peace and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region. Citizenship, age or ethnicity does not matter.
- Applicants must have at least a 3-year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited US college or university or from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad. Equivalency is determined by the University of Hawai’i.
- Candidates will be evaluated for their leadership track record in professional, public, and/or personal realms; international experience and aptitude, including overseas residence, language skills, intercultural and diversity exposure; volunteer and community service experience.
- Applicants must be able to show evidence of interest in and knowledge of the Asia Pacific region, as well as commitment to its future prosperity.
