Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra (UC) is inviting applications for the post of Postdoctoral Fellow to study and research on the subject of ecology and breeding of the endangered grassland ear less dragon in the context of extinction drivers for reptiles. The fellow will work with a team of other researchers and lab technicians at the Institute for Applied Ecology in UC. The project is being run in association with the ACT Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate.
This is a full time fixed-term appointment for three years with a salary range: $81,760 – $110,684 pa, plus Super.
Duties
The successful appointee will have primary responsibility to drive and deliver research under broad direction and supervision of chief investigators Stephen Sarre, Bernd Gruber, Arthur Georges, Tariq Ezaz, and Will Osborne (all Institute for Applied Ecology) and collaborators Don Fletcher and Murray Evans (ACT Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate). The successful applicant will also be expected to co-supervise, train and mentor postgraduate research students. The appointee will be responsible for preparing and contributing to research reports and research publications.
Specific duties required of this level of appointment may include:
- Using radio telemetry to locate and study the nest sites of gravid females;
- Coordinating the establishment of a captive colony of T. pinguicolla at the University of Canberra through the collection and incubation of eggs;
- Delineating the daily activity period of T.pinguicolla, using day to day variation in ambient thermal conditions, to determine the relationship between ambient temperature and duration of daily activity, integrated over the full activity season (spring, summer, autumn).
- Developing a model linking ambient temperature to the daily duration of lizard activity integrated across the full season as the basis for predictive modelling of drought and climate change scenarios
- Contributing to annual and final reports to funding agencies;
- Supervision of honours and postgraduate research students;
- Preparation and delivery of research seminars and conference papers;
- Participation in lab meetings, seminars, workshops where appropriate;
- Other duties as required.
Selection Criteria
- PhD qualification in vertebrate or population ecology;
- A record of research achievement in vertebrate or population ecology, as demonstrated through appropriate research outputs;
- Ability to engage in collaborative research activities, including working as part of an interdisciplinary team;
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal, communication and time management skills;
- Strong record of research project planning and implementation;
- Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to implementation of equity and workplace health and safety principles;
