David & Lucile Packard Foundation, The

The David & Lucile Packard Foundation is an American grantmaking organization established in the year 1964 with the objective of providing philanthropy services to the world’s poor and the needy based upon the values of integrity, respect for all people, belief in individual leadership, commitment to effectiveness and capacity to think big. The Foundation provides grants for innovations and innovative organizations in many fields, extending from scientific research to child development. The core grantmaking areas include the ‘Population Program’ and ‘Children, Families and Communities program.’ There are also ‘Organizational Effectiveness and Philanthropy Funds’ for NGOs that are specifically seeking development of their capacities for provision of better services.NGOs can seek grants by sending a letter of inquiry based upon the thematic priority under the programs of the Foundation. However, it is essential for the applying NGO to review the grantmaking guidelines of the Foundation before submitting inquiries for seeking grants. Sometimes, the Foundation discourages NGOs from sending even unsolicited inquiries. Letters of inquiry should give details about project details, including objectives and the relationship to the Foundation’s priorities. The inquiries can be sent online as well as by mail. If the letters of inquiry are accepted, then the potential grantee is requested to send a full proposal. On approval of the full proposal, grants are given to the organizations.
