As the First Peoples Worldwide’s Keepers of the Earth Fund provides funding to projects that empower Indigenous communities, it is important to understand that all NGOs willing to apply for it should:
- Be Indigenous-led or represent an Indigenous-led project
- Be a grassroots/local organization or group
- Have an organizational bank account or access to a fiscal sponsor
Before developing your project, make sure that it is planned and led by Indigenous communities. This donor agency strongly believes in empowering them and therefore, their role is crucial in the project. To understand how to analyze your target beneficiaries, there is an independent guide to assist you in this regard at this link.
The other important element of your project is that it should be holistic in its approach. If your project is trying to address a specific issue of an Indigenous community, make sure it makes relevant impact upon the overall social, environmental, economic and cultural scenario. First Peoples Worldwide discourages proposals that have limited impact on one or two issues of the communities.
The project should be based on values such as “reciprocity and sharing, respect, responsibility, caring for and honoring one another, and the interdependence of all life.”
Keepers of the Earth Fund accepts proposals every year from January 1 to October 31. There is an application form which you need to download, complete it and submit it by email. You can also mail the completed application.
First Peoples Worldwide also accepts your proposal in video format. So if you are unable to write an application, you can still submit a video of your funding request, upload it on YouTube and inform them about it. There will check it and consider it as an application for your project. You can also submit a DVD copy of your video by mail to them.
