Heber Vega, a humanitarian worker and photographer, originally from Chile, but now based in northern Iraq has come out with some tips for NGOs as to how they can use their photographs for their own benefit. In a recent post on his website, he mentions about the significance of NGOs raising awareness about their causes through photographs. Pictures can play a tremendously important role for NGOs in raising awareness about a cause. According to Jeremy Courney, CEO from Preemptive Love Coalition, a nonprofit organization working in Iraq, photographs can be so relevant for NGOs that they can also help bring revenue to them.
Some of the ideas given by Heber for NGOs in this regard are: starting a photo blog. Instead of storing photographs in computer hard drives, NGOs can start a blog and upload it with their photographs with brief captions. These photographs can be representing their work or highlighting an issue. Herber’s second idea for NGOs is to use photographs for making brochures, which can further be used as fundraising material. Organizing an event such as a photo exhibition is also a useful idea not only for promoting awareness about one’s work but also for seeking donations and other forms of support from individuals. There are also couple more ideas such as developing stories around pictures and also publishing a book on them.
