Will open for applications in Early 2015
The Humanitarian Innovation Fund supports organizations and individuals to identify, nurture and share innovative and scalable solutions to the challenges facing effective humanitarian assistance. The HIF will open for Small Grants facility in early 2015. It will also convene a number of Accelerated Innovation challenges, focusing on the most pressing concerns of the sector identified in the HIF’s WASH Gap Analysis and selected by the HIF’s WASH Technical Working Group.
For HIF Small Grants Facility, the Fund expects to see some form of systematic learning effort, outlined as part of a learning plan developed at the outset of the project. Grant request can be made for up to £20,000 for the recognition, invention & diffusion of a humanitarian innovation.
Small Grant Facility will be open for three of the five key stages of innovation process – recognition, invention and diffusion.
- Recognition of a problem, a challenge or an obstacle to be overcome; with a corresponding opportunity for innovation.
- Invention of a solution, or an idea, which helps to address the problem or seize the opportunity.
- Diffusion of the innovation leading to its wider adoption, outside the original setting.
WASH Grants Priority Areas
- Latrine design, including latrine alternatives in urban areas or where flooding is prevalent, as well as measures to ensure safe use such as lighting and maintenance.
- Waste management issues, including drainage, desludging and excreta disposal, as well as solid was management in emergency settings.
- Community participation and hygiene promotion, spanning hand washing and sanitation marketing issues.
- Water treatment and storage challenges, including the need the need for new water containers and bulk and point of use household filters.

Eligibility Criteria
- Lead applicants must be one of the following:
- a non-profit institution such as a non-governmental organization
- a public or governmental institution
- an academic or research institution.
- Project can be located anywhere.
- The project must not cause harm to the beneficiaries in particular and to people in general.
- The project should aim to make a positive contribution towards the welfare of people.
- The project must respect and protect the rights and dignity of beneficiaries and people in general.
- The benefits and risks of the project should be fairly distributed and agreed to among people.
- The project should make every effort to receive clearance from the appropriate national authorities.
