The Endangered Language Fund is accepting proposals for Language Legacies Grant Program 2015. The grant is provided for language documentation and revitalization, and linguistic field work. The main purpose of this grant is to serve the native communities and field of linguistics.
Grants are for a one year period, though extensions may be applied for. Grants in this round will be less than $4,000, and to average about $2,000. Grant also includes expenses such as consultant fees, travel, equipments, etc.
ELF was founded in 1996 with the goal of supporting endangered language preservation and documentation projects. ELF’s grants have promoted work in over 30 countries and have seen a wide range of projects, from the development indigenous radio programs in South Dakota, to the establishment of orthographies and literacy materials to be used by endangered language teaching programs all over the world.
Eligibility Criteria
- Researchers and language activists from any country are eligible to apply.
- Institutions are eligible but no administrative (overhead, indirect) costs are covered.
- The language involved must be in danger of disappearing within a generation or two.
- Many languages in the northwestern United States of America are NOT eligible for the Language Legacies grant. Those languages are Arapaho, Arikara, Assiniboine, Blackfoot, Chetco, Cheyenne, Chinook, Chinook, Amerindian, Chippewa, Coeur D’Alene, Comanche, Coquille, Crow, Dakota/Nakota, Delaware/Unami, Galice, Gros Ventre, Hidatsa, Ho-Chunk, Iowa-Oto, Kalapuya, Kalispel-Pend, D’Oreille, Kansa, Kaw, Kickapoo, Kiowa, Kutenai, Lakota, Lower Chehalis, Mandan, Meskwakie, Molalla, Monacan (Tutelo), Nez Perce, Okanogan, Omaha-Ponca, Paiute, Pawnee, Potawatomi, Quinault, Shawnee, Shoshoni, Spokane, Straits Salish, Tenino, Tillamook, Tolowa, Tututni, Umatilla, Upper Chehalis, Walla Walla, Wasco, Wenatchee, Yakima.
How to Apply
Applications must be received before the deadline. There is no online application form but application must contain following documents:
- Cover page
- Description of the project
- Budget
- Letter of support
- Limit to one proposal
- Acknowledgement of Receipt
