The Rapid Ocean Conservation (ROC) has started accepting preliminary grant applications from small, local NGOs, domestically or abroad, for its Grants Program to provide small grants of up to $10,000 for solutions to emerging marine conservation issues and sustainable fishing.
The foundation’s sole focus is Ocean Conservation with an emphasis on sustainable fishing practices and marine protected areas.
Focus Areas
Grants will fund projects related to sustainable fishing and marine protected areas (MPAs). This includes sub-themes of:
- Scientific Research: natural science or social science projects
- Policy Making
- Management: Includes enforcement and infrastructure support
- Communications: Includes raising public awareness, advertizing and engaging stakeholders.
Funding
For the ROC Grants Program, the typical funding amount is $1,000 – $10,000 and not to exceed a request of $20,000. Project funds will be distributed within 2 weeks of funding decisions.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can be organisations around the world that must maintain legitimate affiliation with an academic institution or NGO for the duration of the grant project.
- Project must support sustainable fishing and/or MPAs as elaborated in the program focus section.
- Applicants need not hold advanced degrees, but must demonstrate a commensurate level of experience and expertise with respect to the proposed project.
- ROC Grants are not for individuals.
- Spending of grant funds must commence within 1 month of granting, and be completed within 6.
- Funds cannot be used for event sponsorship (e.g. conferences, workshops).

Stage 1-Preliminary On-line Grant Application
- Complete an online Preliminary Grant Request. All applications must be submitted via our website for consideration. A list of requested information (including word count limits) is noted below.
- Other Required Documents-
- Budget specifically related to project. A sample format is provided below.
- Project Timeline
- Applicants Proof of non-profit 501(c)(3) tax status as determined by the IRS.
- International Applicants – Proof of public charitable status equivalent under U.S. tax laws.
- Additional Documents (if any)
Note: Preliminary Grant Requests are accepted year-round.
Stage 2- Full On-line Grant Proposal
Applicants selected will be invited to submit a full grant proposal for further evaluation and consideration. Applicants must submit full proposal and project specific budget for how the Waitt Foundation funds would be used, via online application form. Applications without a budget will not be considered.
