Applications are invited by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender to grant support to scholarly activities on women and gender. The main aim of SEED is to enhance disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary scholarship or creative activities on women and gender at the University of Michigan. Support is required for individual scholarly activities as travel to research sites, purchase of research materials along with books, microfilms, or other items, research assistance or for collaborative projects as pilot or initial research efforts, study groups, conference planning and implementation.
The major focus of this program is to offer funds for innovative as well as emerging work. Moreover, this program also offers support to on-going research programs. Applications from various academic disciplines include the arts, humanities and sciences which are encouraged. This program has an extensive scope with reference to type of projects; we hope to fund request which is available in different sizes. Depending specifically on the scope of the projects, Funds may be requested from $500 to $10,000. Recipients of these funding programs will be asked to review future proposals for the funding programs.
Applications are encouraged from those seeking matching funds for grants from other sources to our limit. Successful applicants are expected to offer brief written reports following the award.
Eligibility:
- Tenure track, non-tenure track, or emeritus faculty, clinical faculty, research faculty, and librarians are eligible to submit applications. Applicants are encouraged to include students in project plans,
- But the principal investigator must not be a student or postdoctoral fellow. Normally applications will not be accepted from individuals who received awards last year. Members of the Institute’s Executive Committee are not eligible to submit applications.
Review Process:
Reviews will be completed by an interdisciplinary panel of faculty affiliated with the institute.
Selection Criteria for Seed Grants
Applications will be judged on the basis of:
- The quality and significance of the scholarly or creative activity proposed
- centrality of research on women or gender to the project
- inclusion of appropriate attention to issues of race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, culture,
- nationality, social class, or other differences among women and men
- value of the project to the career development of faculty and/or students
- contribution of the project to the study of women or gender at the University of Michigan (in
- terms of scholarly, training, or curricular influence, or external funding and others as well)
- Human Subjects Review
- Compliance with all appropriate regulations governing conduct of research will be required.
