Founded in 1998 by two human rights lawyers, the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) works to make Africa a land where people have easy access to justice. IHRDA is dedicated to promotion of human rights with the help of national, African and international human rights law and mechanisms. IHRDA also believes that African human rights laws can be very effectively used for justice if common people have basic information about how to use these laws.
IHRDA’s mandate is to increase the effectiveness and accessibility of the human rights protection mechanisms of the African Union. To achieve its mandate, IHRDA with the financial support of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), is operating a fund for individuals/groups litigating cases before the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights. The fund covers travel, accommodation and other related expenses.
IHRDA is currently inviting grant applications from eligible candidates to attend the 50th Ordinary Session of the ACmHPR that will take place in Banjul, The Gambia from 24 October – 7 November 2011.
