The Global Fund for Women aims at advancing the rights of women and girls worldwide by increasing their resources and investing in women-led organizations and women’s collective leadership for change. The Fund strengthens women-led groups based outside the United States by providing grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 per year for operating and project expenses. First-time grant awards generally range from $5,000 to $13,000 per year. The Fund envisions a sustainable world in which women and girls have resources, voice, choice and opportunities to realize their human rights. The fund intended to provide 500 grants annually.
By now, the Global Fund for Women has made a total of 10,021 grants for $120,883,544.59 to 4,776 organizations in 175 countries.
Critical Areas of Interest
- Freedom from Violence– The goal is to end gender based violence. The organization fund and advocate for women’s and girls’ participation, empowerment, and peace building while challenging laws, policies, cultures and behavior that perpetuates discrimination, violence and abuse.
- Economic and Political Empowerment – The goal is to make all women economically secure and independent and support by policies ensuring women’s and girls’ equal rights to resources, livelihoods and political voice.
- Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights – The goal is to make women and girls free to make their own reproductive and sexual choices. Sexual and reproductive health services and information are readily available.

2016 Timeline
- September 1, 2015: Open for online Organizational Profile submission
- January 31, 2016: Deadline for submitting an Organizational Profile for the 2016 grantmaking cycle
- March 15, 2016: Groups that have submitted an Organizational Profile will be invited to submit a proposal or notified of decline
- June 30, 2016: Applicants will be notified of award or decline
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be a group of women working together.
- The group should be governed, directed, and led by women.
- Groups do not need to be registered non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to qualify for funding.
- The primary focus of the group should be in advancing women’s equality and human rights.
- The group should not be based in USA.
- Global Fund for Women does NOT fund the following:
- Government entities
- International organizations proposing projects with local partners
- Political parties or election campaigns
- Women’s branches/departments/projects of mixed gender organizations
How to Apply
All groups that wish to be considered for our 2016 annual grantmaking cycle must submit an Organizational Profile through our secure online system. If deemed qualified, these applicants will be contacted and invited to submit a full proposal for funding.
