First developed and implemented in 2007, the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) is the approach adopted by European Union for promotion of democracy and human rights in the whole world. The main aim of this program is contributing to the development and consolidation of democracy and the rule of law, and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms, within the framework of the Community’s policy on development cooperation, and economic, financial and technical cooperation with third countries, and consistent with the European Union’s foreign policy as a whole.
General Objectives of the Program
The general objectives of the EIDHR financing instrument are to contribute to the development and consolidation of democracy and the rule of law, and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms, within the framework of the Community’s policy on development cooperation, and economic, financial and technical cooperation with third countries, and consistent with the European Union’s foreign policy as a whole.
Open Call for Proposals
EC has issued an open call for grant proposals under the EIDHR program from eligible organizations aimed at strengthening the role of CSOs in promoting human rights and democratic reform, in facilitating peaceful conciliation of group interests and in consolidating political participation and representation in Swaziland.
Specific Objectives Call For Proposals
1. Pursuit of common agendas for human rights and democratic reform. For example:
– Activities to promote women and / or children’s’ rights and other vulnerable groups
– Activities to promote a fairer electoral system
– Activities advocating the abolition of the death penalty, the prevention of torture and ill-treatment
– Activities to provide universal access to justice
– Other activities…
2. Enhancing political representation and participation. For example:
– Activities to promote civic education
– Activities to empower underrepresented groups
– Activities to promote responsiveness and accountability from legislative bodies
– Other activities…
3. Initiatives to enhance the inclusiveness and pluralism of media in Swaziland. For example:
– Activities to promote independent and responsible media
– Activities to promote freedom of expression through media
– Activities to improve freedom of information and access to information
– Activities to promote media self regulation and improving professional standards
– Other activities…
Proposal must address at least one of these specific objectives.
Size of grants
Any grant awarded under this Call for Proposals must fall between the following minimum and maximum amounts:
– minimum amount: EUR 250,000
– maximum amount: EUR 300,000
