The United Nations OHCHR is the principal United Nations office mandated to promote and protect human rights for all. The OHCHR leads global human rights efforts speaks out objectively in the face of human rights violations worldwide. It provides a forum for identifying, highlighting and developing responses to today’s human rights challenges, and act as the principal focal point of human rights research, education, public information, and advocacy activities in the United Nations system.
OHCHR Funds & Grants
- Assisting Communities Together (ACT) Grants to Civil Society Organizations for HR Education Activities – Jointly with UNDP (United Nations Development Program), the OHCHR provides small grant funding to civil society organizations for carrying out human rights promotional activities in local communities. The support focuses on strengthening local capacities for human rights education, training and public information.
- Special Fund of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture to help finance the implementation of the recommendations made by the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) after a visit to a State party to the Optional Protocol, as well as education programs of national preventive mechanisms (NPMs).
- The UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples gives indigenous peoples the opportunity to participate in the sessions of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Human Rights Council, including its Universal Periodic Review mechanism, and the treaty bodies.
- The UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture assists individuals whose human rights have been severely violated as a result of torture, with the aim of rebuilding their lives and restoring their dignity. It provides direct assistance to victims of torture and their family members through grants awarded to non-governmental channels of assistance, including NGOs, rehabilitation centers and others.
- The UN Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery assists individuals, whose human rights have been severely violated as a result of modern slavery. It provides direct humanitarian, legal and financial assistance to victims through grants awarded to non-governmental organizations.
