Nordic World Heritage Foundation (NWHF) and the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) with the support of Fredskorpset (FK Norway) are offering two internships as part of an exchange programme between NWHF and AWHF. Following a mandatory preparatory course in Norway in September 2011, the fellows will work a full year with AWHF in Midrand, South Africa, before returning to NWHF in Oslo for a follow-up period in November 2012.
Professional background and experience:
– Advanced university degree (MA, MBA, MSc) in political/social/environmental sciences and preferably development/environmental related work experience. Candidates having obtained an undergraduate university degree with documented relevant work experience will be considered.
– Project management and implementation experience, preferably including monitoring and evaluation experience.
– Good IT proficiency.
– Heritage knowledge and international experience will be preferred, but is not required.
Aims of the exchange project:
– to strengthen the North-South relationship, promote the UNESCO Global Strategy and contribute to good governance and management of World Heritage Sites, with specific emphasis on World Heritage in the context of sustainable development and achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
– to contribute to the UNESCO Global Strategy for a balanced, representative and more credible World Heritage List, by supporting a region currently underrepresented on the List.
– to increase the capacity of African countries in conservation and management of natural and cultural heritage by sharing expertise and experiences. By so doing, the countries will be in a better position to utilise World Heritage sites to address issues related to sustainable development.
Objectives:
– Promote sustainable development through tourism.
– Improve project implementation and coordinated project monitoring and evaluation systems.
– Closer cooperation between UNESCO Category 2 Centres for implementation of 35C/22.
– Strengthen the Periodic Reporting tool.
– Strengthen capacity to implement and manage programmes and activities.
– Strengthen the ability to develop and encourage good practices in nomination and management of World Heritage Sites.
– Consolidate institutional capacities of AWHF.
