Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Chief Curator in Canada.
The Chief Curator will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the curatorial department and for fostering a collaborative culture within the department and across the museum.
The mission of AKDN is to work to improve the welfare and prospects of people in the developing world, particularly in Asia and Africa, without regard to faith, origin or gender.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Chief Curator will perform the following functions-
- Responsible for the care and research on the collection.
- Oversee the development and implementation of a research strategy on the collection, identifying key areas of research that need to be conducted, and matching them to internal resources and external partners that are capable of undertaking the work in a timely manner.
- Develop and manage a program of object conservation on priority objects in the collection, ensuring best-practice in the identification of needs and their remedy through the work of expert conservators.
- Identify and research art objects for acquisition; prepare proposals for review by the art acquisitions committee; responsible for developing and maintaining the museum’s art acquisition policy.
- Take a leading role in the conceptualization, design, realization and installation of temporary exhibitions; develop major international exhibitions in partnership with leading collections; identify key exhibitions for loan to the Museum.
- Oversee the program of object rotations in the gallery, drawing from objects in the collection and with objects borrowed from other institutions.
- Interpret works of art on exhibition in an engaging manner; oversee interpretation created by the department.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- A PhD or equivalent in Islamic art history.
- Minimum of 7 years of management-level museum experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience as a museum curator.
- Demonstrated record of publishing and teaching in the field of Islamic art.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well to a wide range of audiences.
- Good knowledge of languages, among them English, French, German, and especially Arabic.
- Demonstrated willingness to take the initiative on museum projects.
- A deep passion for art history and its role in art museums.
- A clear perspective on the contribution of Islamic art to world civilization.
- A strong network of academic colleagues in the field of Islamic art.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and to work well under tight timelines or changes in priorities.
- Exceptional communication skills, oral and written.
- Strong work ethics, professional and personal integrity.
- A creative and dynamic thinker.
- A team player.
- An affinity with the underlining goals and philosophy of the Aga Khan Development Network.
