United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Director in Bangkok, Thailand.
ESCAP is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Director performs the following functions-
- Formulates and implements the substantive work programme of the Macroeconomics Policy and Financing for Development Division in areas identified above and conducts evidence-based, high quality analytical research and analysis supported by economic and financial modeling and policy simulations.
- Leads and oversees the management of activities undertaken by the Division, ensuring programmed activities are carried out in a timely manner and coordinates work both within the Division, across ESCAP Divisions and Offices, and with other organizations of the United Nations System, as appropriate.
- Leads and produces research, analytical reports and technical papers on relevant areas and provides programmatic/substantive reviews of the drafts prepared by others.
- Reports to intergovernmental bodies on budget/programme performance or on programmatic/substantive issues, as appropriate, particularly those presented in biannual and/or annual reports.
- Oversees and prepares the work programme of the Division, determining priorities, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery.
- Recruits staff, taking due account of geographical and gender balance.
- Manages guides, develops and trains staff under his/her supervision.
- Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Division and across organizational boundaries.
- Leads and supervises the organization of meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive issues.
- Manages the substantive preparation and organization of such meetings or seminars.
- Undertakes other duties at the direction of the Executive Secretary.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, econometrics, financing for development, or related area.
- PhD degree in one of the above areas is desirable.
- A relevant first-level university degree in one of the above areas in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A minimum of fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in policy oriented research, formulation and advice in areas related to macroeconomic and financing for development issues, macro econometric modeling and/or policy simulation or related areas.
- Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining professional networks required.
- Experience in leading and managing a sizable and diverse work unit is required.
- A strong publications record on macroeconomics, policy model simulation, least developed countries and/or development financing in peer reviewed journals is desirable.
- Relevant professional experience in the Asia and the Pacific region is highly desirable.
- Fluency in English is required. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
