The United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Gender Affairs Officer based in Juba, South Sudan.
UNMISS’ objective is to consolidate peace and security, and help establish conditions for development in the Republic of South Sudan, with a view to strengthening the capacity of the Government of South Sudan to govern effectively and democratically and establish good relations with its neighbours.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Gender Affairs Officer will perform the following functions-
- Supports and guides the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security (WPS).
- Supports the organization of consultations and capacity building activities for the Government Gender Machinery and women civil society leaders to further women’s participation in local, regional and national peace and state-building, both in political and policy related processes.
- Deliver gender and SGBV training for all levels of personnel in civilian, police and military components
- Drafts, collates and edits specified inputs for all mission reports and documentation on gender mainstreaming.
- Participates and contributes to the work of established inter-agency coordination mechanisms for gender mainstreaming and to partnership efforts with UN agencies that have complementary mandates for the promotion of women and girls’ rights.
- Provides technical expertise as required to relevant partners and mission components on strategies for gender mainstreaming, including expanding the capacity for gender analysis and designing gender-sensitive policies and programmes.
- Supports the results-based budgeting (RBB) process and provides substantive inputs to results based reporting and analysis;
- Facilitates monitoring and reporting methodologies and benchmarking for all activities.
- Participates in national and/or regional meetings, workshops and training programmes relevant to the work of the team;
- Supports the Women’s Protection Adviser in order to strengthen the work of the gender component in responding to Conflict Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) with respect to mainstreaming policies to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and CRSV;
- In collaboration with Human Rights Officers (Women’s Protection), provides training to all mission components on sexual violence concerns at the working level.
- Contributes to the development and strengthening of the referral pathway for survivors of CRSV/SGBV (to be assumed by the mission) within the framework of existing GBV coordination mechanisms at the working level;
- Participates in the work of mission’s Joint Protection Teams, UN inter-agency Assessment Missions and similar modalities;
- Supports the knowledge management and data collection process of the Gender Advisory Unit with regard to CRSV and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and facilitates the collection and exchange of information between partners and the Gender Advisory Unit.
- Drafts, collates and edits specified inputs for all mission reports and related documentation on sexual violence within the mission area, as needed.
- Collaborates with the mission’s training unit to develop and deliver gender training to uniformed and civilian mission personnel and conduct orientation activities on gender mainstreaming in the mission.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, international relations, social studies, gender studies or in a related area.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the field of international relations, law, gender and/or peacekeeping issues at policy and operational levels is required.
- Strong experience in the promotion of gender equality in a post-conflict setting is required.
- Previous experience in delivering gender and sexual and gender-based violence training to various audiences is highly desirable.
- Prior experience in a peacekeeping environment is desirable.
- Fluency in oral and written English and French.
