World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Senior Economist in Geneva, Switzerland. The duration of this post is 2 years.
The Senior Economist will be responsible for the conduct and supervision of economic analysis work on the creative economy including the roles of the copyright-based industries.
The mission of WIPO is to lead the development of a balanced and effective international intellectual property (IP) system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Senior Economist will perform the following functions-
- Initiate, develop, plan and implement ESD’s research program on the creative economy, working closely with the Culture and Creative Industries Sector.
- Develop and produce empirical studies contributing to evidence-based policymaking on the role of IP, in particular copyright, in the creative economy, relying on state-of-the-art methodological approaches.
- Advise on the selection of and supervise the work of consultants who conduct or contribute to empirical studies.
- Conceive and implement the collection of new statistical data on the copyright system and the performance of the creative economy, in collaboration with the IP Statistics Section and relevant public and private stakeholders in the creative economy.
- Contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the area of copyright economics by presenting technical papers in academic conferences and submitting them to peer-reviewed journals.
- Oversee the continual development of the work unit’s internal and public web pages in relation to research on the creative economy.
- Establish and maintain contacts with academic economists and policymakers to verify preliminary conclusions of studies, obtain data and information on or elucidation of policy intentions.
- Perform other related duties as required; participate in the activities of the Division, including providing inputs to the work of the other Sections.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Advanced university degree in economics with a strong empirical focus.
- PhD in economics.
- At least nine years of professional experience in conducting economic analysis in the field of intellectual property, including applied research in support of evidence-based policymaking.
- Strong publication record, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Strong background in economic modeling, data analysis, econometrics and statistics, including using information technology tools and databases for analysis.
- Experience in the field of copyright and the creative economy.
- Experience in working with governmental or international organizations.
- Excellent knowledge of the functioning of the copyright system, especially at the international level.
- Excellent knowledge of the creative economy.
- Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English.
- Good knowledge of one or more other UN official languages.
