Amnesty International (AI) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Senior Legal Adviser in Mexico.
The Senior Legal Adviser leads and develops the work of Amnesty International (AI) on international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law, including by overseeing legal guidance and review, legal standard setting initiatives, and litigation.
The AI’s global campaign is to change the lives of those suffering human rights abuses.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Senior Legal Adviser will perform the following functions-
- Oversee the work of legal and policy advisers assigned to the SLA’s areas of focus (equality and dignity issues), and ensure the, including the timely delivery of analysis of international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law and legal advice on the implementation of international law at the national level, in order to ensure that AI strategies and public documents are of the highest quality and advance progressive interpretations of international law and standards.
- Serve as the LPP’s lead in the area of non-discrimination and gender equality and ensure that its legal and policy analysis systematically and progressively mainstreams gender.
- Play a lead role in providing quality assurance advice and training for Amnesty International and Movement staff in the Americas, in coordination with LPP and other staff based in other locations.
- Lead the development of policy and strategies for the advancement of international law, including through the strategic use of human rights bodies and procedures, litigation in international regional and national tribunals.
- As required, represent AI in field research missions to contribute to the delivery of high-quality analysis of human rights abuses and effective, evidence-based recommendations for change.
- Lead the development of strategies and project plans in order to help ensure delivery of AI’s priorities.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Professional qualification to practice law from at least one jurisdiction and substantial experience in the practice of law is essential.
- Outstanding knowledge of and experience in the application of international law, including international human rights law, humanitarian law and international criminal law, is essential.
- Substantial and externally acknowledged legal and policy expertise and leadership in advancing non-discrimination and gender equality.
- An excellent knowledge of one of the following areas is essential: criminal law and criminal procedure; the principles of parallel, customary, or traditional legal systems; state responsibility, non-state actors, and bases for extraterritorial jurisdiction under international law.
- Excellent ability to evaluate situations and issues in the short, medium and long term, set strategic goals in accordance with organizational priorities, monitors plans, and evaluate outcomes.
- Excellent ability to manage people and resources, plan and prioritize work, including when under pressure, and to ensure that deadlines are met.
- Ability to manage a team long-distance and willingness to regularly participate in early morning conference calls with colleagues based across the globe.
