United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Senior Programme Management Officer in Nairobi, Kenya.

Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Senior Programme Management Officer will perform the following functions-
- Responsible for formulating, and implementing, through subordinate professional and support staff, the GPA work programme approved by the Inter-governmental Review Meetings (lGR), and within delegated authority the incumbent will manage the human and financial resources of the Unit and prepare reports to the IGR and to the Division for UN reporting requirements in IMDIS.
- Coordination and development of the DEPI/GPA.
- Coordinate activities to facilitate implementation of the GPA for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities, including its clearing-house mechanism and the mobilization of resources.
- Liaise with relevant UN agencies, inter-governmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations to ensure their full participation in the implementation of the GPA.
- Initiate and/or assess and recommend the viability of environmental projects and programme elements, negotiating suitable executing arrangements and project financing.
- Oversee the preparation of reports for presentation to senior management, UN Environment Assemblies and Intergovernmental bodies.
- Develop and advocate innovative concepts and tools designed to improve or re-orient implementation of the GPA with UNEP’s policy objectives.
- Lead, organize and/or participate in substantive discussions, meetings, and conferences and represent the unit at international, regional or national meetings and provide programmatic and substantive expertise on pollution of the aquatic environment from land-based activities.
- Coordinate and convene expert and Inter-governmental meetings to periodically review progress on implementation of the GPA including quality of the technical papers and follow up to the Intergovernmental review decisions.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in marine or freshwater science, biology, engineering, environmental management, international development, international relations or other related areas required.
- A first university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in marine or freshwater science, environmental management or other related fields, of which 5 years should be at the international level and 2 years in a supervisory capacity and management of programmes.
- Fluency in oral and written English is essential. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Working knowledge of French or Spanish is an advantage.
